As of the time of this study, we’ve been trying to get an EV certificate from Thawte for almost 7 weeks. We still haven’t obtained it because we’re still waiting for them to complete the validation process. Timeline: November 24: Orders received on November 30: No contact from Thawte. Contacted help via chat to see if there was something we could do to make the order easier. We’ve been told no. December 5: There’s still no response from Thawte, contacted Thawte help to get an update. December 6: Thawte emailed to say that we needed some paperwork to be done in order to certify me as a legal employee who can order a certificate. 8 December: sent completed paperwork to Thawte asking it to be expedited due to delays. 13 December: Thawte finally sends emails to tell me that the paperwork has been submitted to the appropriate processing team. December 19: After no reply, I emailed Thawte again asking for an update. December 21: A colleague contacted Thawte by phone to escalate the order. It was informed that they would be engaged to complete the processing on the next day. Thawte proposed that as a way of going ahead with our project, we could choose to obtain an SSL123 certificate and use it before the EV could be completed. I recommended against that, stating that it was not acceptable to purchase another certificate because of their terrible service. 22 December: No response from the Thawte Processing Team. The department whose project needs to move forward must agree to purchase the SSL123 certificate. 26 December: Thawte finally sends back an email stating that the paperwork is not appropriate for the type of certificate that we are ordering (even though they have provided the paperwork) and has provided me with new paperwork. December 28: I emailed a question about some of the organization’s unique details that we need to fill in. December 29: Thawte sent me an email to respond to my request. We have submitted the completed paperwork. January 4: Thawte indicates that they need to complete a call to test my work. No issue, I have received contact information for our HR department. No call got by the end of the working day, I sent them an email to inform that I will be out of office on the 5th. January 5th: They send an email to remind them to arrange a call for January 8th. It’s 10 January now, and we haven’t got a message. I’m at the end of my wits trying to get this done. By far and beyond, this is the very worst service I’ve ever had to deal with. I can’t even put into words the sheer amount of rage and frustration that this awful service is struggling with. I have three times proposed canceling the order entirely and doing business elsewhere, but the powers that be insist that we see it through to completion because of the efforts made so far. If you need SSL certificates, I highly suggest that you look elsewhere and avoid Thawte.
We first tried with Comodo, without success, because it was awful, and we had to cancel order because they were unable to validate our company using the official phone book ! On the opposite Thawte was easy, and professional !
I had nothing but trouble with Thawte. When the certificate expires, there is no warning. And if you’re going to need a shift, you get absolutely zero support from them. If you want to upgrade and tell them that the email address has changed, they’re behaving like they’re changing it, but instead they’re still sending all the messages to the old account. At least I think they’re doing it because I don’t get anything from them. I modified the SSL for 2 years, then found that our VPS was no longer usable until the certificate was released. I sent an email to cancel before I could get another VPS. No reply from Thawte. I got the SSL, but I didn’t get a reply to the cancel message. I submitted 2 more requests and still have no response from this very weak organization with no funding. Stay the hell away from them. There are a lot of places to get your SSL and a lot less money. Don’t buy a great SSL hype. There’s no better location than someone else.
A well known SSL certficate brand which uses Syamntec timestamp services for ongoing validation of signed applications. Very easy to use.
Customers trust in SSL. We trust in Thawte
I manage a couple dozen certs with Thawte and we’ve never had any problems. They’ve been very responsive to questions – always helpful.
I prefer to use Thawte for a number of reasons. Broad compatibility, ease of installation and certificate generation, and price. “Best bang for the buck” if you will. I’ve never contacted customer support because I’ve never had to. The certificate portal is incredibly easy to use – simple but powerful.
In the first place the certificate is not trusted by most browsers. They give you a long set of instructions of how to make it work and at the end it did not function at all. I contacted their support and got told that because I purchased the certificate through a re-seller they are not able to assist me. I will never use Thawte
Advised by sales that wildcard certs are only purchasable with a credit card payment. Not for me, need to be invoiced. Went elsewhere.
All proceed well, fast and seamless
What I was most appreciative of was that I was able to call and talk to a live person who answered my questions. Even if the transaction itself was made online, it is very important for me to be able to speak to a real person about the inevitable problems that I may often have that are not covered by the sales materials on the site. So Thawte’s great customer service was the reason I chose this company, and I’ve been really satisfied with it ever since.
the renewal process is smooth and the speed of fee refund is acceptable
I encountered an error during the order verification and emailed to customer service. I received an email that the certificate was approved within the same day.
1. easy to renew the digital cert 2. your representative Jolene Harker is very helpful and help us a lot 3. pricing is competitive
We were very nearly late in renewing our license but processing, notifications and receipt of certificates was timeous.. Reminders and Assistance have always been very forthcoming..
The renewal process was fast and did not involve repeating any of the initial documentation steps
Unfortunately our certificate with Network Solutions had expired and it would have taken 10 business days to get it renewed. I placed the order on Friday morning and we had the certificate and had it installed before 5:00 that same day.
Thawte was very helpful with my very rare SSL certificate requests. I’ve had a variety of phone calls and helpful email messages while I’ve found out what we really needed for our situation. They were also very helpful when it came to repaying the balance of the replaced certificates as required.
It was very simple and fast to complete the renew process
Straight forward transaction, good documentation. The best is the SSL Assistant that configures everything for you, Simples!
After I moved to the new host that I had to do the IT part of the website myself, our SSL Certificate had almost expired, then I contacted Thawte Support via the chat interface and they directed me all the way to give clear steps and recommend the best course of action, while I was chatting with them, the tech guy transferred me to the sales department, they quickly processed my order and transfeed me. A ton of Thanx Thawte!
Quick renewal of the certificate. Excellent technical support when I had trouble adding the certificate to the servers. Availability of technical support is why I keep coming back to Thawte
We’ve been using Thawte a couple of years and we made a mistake and choose another company. It was a nightmare and it will never happen again. Thawte is our friend for a lifetime.
We renewed our SSL certificate without any problems. Security checks were in place and delivery of the certificate was prompt and efficient. Regards
Excellent Service, pricing is fantastic, Support is superb handling of requests and the turn around in response time is far beyond what other SSL suppliers can offer, Had to get a cert reissued it was in my inbox within moments of speaking to support, WOW
The renewal was an easy and fast single step. I did have a question and support was able to answer it in a reasonable time frame.”
I tried for the last one month for installing a SSL on my site. But since I am not sure on the steps, I keep on raising tickets. Finally, I tried to contact thawte chat support where I was avoided. I was trying to make the “https” work and failing till now. Regards, Chandar. R
Buying certs from Thawte is painful. The UI on the website is complete soup. Its always takes longer than from any other provider.
very helpful and fix my problem immediately
I’ve been using Thawte for years. Their service is excellent, pricing is great, and their turn around on requests are quick. When I had to replace a compromised certificate, it only took a few hours to get a replacement at no charge.
I don’t manage directly because this is in charge of the specific software house. However my opinion abount the overall service is good
clear certificate upgrade process, well detailed instructions for any OS
I have been using thawte code signing certificate for years. Thawte handling is exceptionally fine. The last certificate renewal was way simpler than ever before. Rather than providing some official papers again each year, a telephone check was enough now.
I delete the wrong cert, because it confused the order. The support team helped us to recover the private key very quickly, and to install the correct cert. To all-> obey the domuments and all is going to be work. We’re just so proud!
Ordered certificate and received it same day prior to expiration!
Purchasing a certificate on their web site is very simple. The process is fast and simple, with quick reaction. One time I had to contact Customer Service and they instantly helped me with no trouble. I do suggest Thawte definitely.
Quick, responsive service from Thawte
I have been using Thawte services for a long time now as in the web certification authority, not once I had to contact help there, all the details I needed was on the platform, making it very easy to produce, install and forget it until the next renewal and certificate request
We have Client accounts. Very effective once that account has been set up. It may take some time to set up such an account, but that’s where I see Thawte as a significant, qualified certificate authority that effectively verifies organizational authenticity.
Thawte sent us an info mail 1 month before the expiration, but we failed to renew it immediately. Our SSL123 Cert expired and before our customers protested, nobody remembered it. We then renewed it in minutes and got it in 12 hours.
We lost our email from our admin address to request authorization but your support guy (Jason Lipschitz) was incredibly helpful and quickly solved the problem for us. The whole process can be a complex one, but you should not have any problems if you follow the procedures – which are very well documented.
Hi there, we have used thawte for years and perceive them as a company that is reliable and trustworthy. I would recommend it to these for whom safety really matters.
Llevo usando Thawte desde hace varios años y su servicio siempre ha sido excelente. Los certificados se emiten rápidamente y los procesos de renovación son prácticamente automáticos.
Working with them for years. Always found good solutions to our needs.
Well explained instructions on Website and quick service!
I had to ask for feedback and progress all the time. Without my continuous prompting, I would still be waiting for the certificate.
I bought the certificate more than a year ago, they gave me a quick answer, I downloaded it and the CSS was installed without any hazzel. I got multiple offers shortly before due date to save some money purchasing the new certificate. Notifications help the datelines not pass. When it was time to renew certificates the operation was running smoothly again. I had a problem and they were attentive, prompt and efficient. Their service is formidable. I highly recommend this.
I don’t comprehend the negative feedback that I see here. The customer service may be spotty but it was incredible in my experience. I would never have had to buy a signing certificate or sign a request and they walked me through the whole process. I had so many things badly messed up and they managed to assist me patiently. The customer service rep has helped me with computer issues well beyond the reach of signing code. I have never had better customer service, ever. Even when GrubHub gave me free food, because I was late in my order. Well shot, Bravo, Thawte.
I still find Thwates Customer Service very helpful. You never feel like they’re just trying to get you off the track, they ‘re going to stick around until the question is solved and they know what it’s about.
For many years we have been using Thawte certificates with no big problems. This year recently we learned that our certificate was about to expire in two days. So, we needed urgent renewal of our certificate. After contacting the support center and explaining that we urgently needed the certificate, they kindly phoned us and sent us the new certificate in under an hour.
The ordering process was very easy and quick, as well generating and installing the SSL certificate.
They asked for one piece of information at a time, delaying our order for weeks instead of presenting a list of details they will need to check our site ownership and issue our certificate. They still haven’t even called 4 weeks after placing our order to check our phone number. Another 3-day delay has been caused by a very small discrepancy in the way our business name is listed in the Registrant Details domain vs our Legal Company name. We signed up via Geotrust after waiting too long, and our certificate is due to be released within 24 hours following a phone check during business hours. DO NOT deal with Thawte. Having read the other horror story reviews, I ‘m shocked that our hosting provider is a reseller of the SSL products from this service.
This is the first time I ordered a web server certificate. The order process on their site is easy to follow. When I needed some handholding to get the installation completed, their customer service was quick and knowledgable.
Very easy – we use Thawte for all of our websites.
To submit proforma invoice, it took 25 days to contact with Thawte support personel. Furthermore their web interface did not allow the order to be changed or cancelled. And I couldn’t extend the certificate because the proforma invoice was hanging for one I couldn’t get for. So at 1/10th of the price, I finally switched from Thawte to CheapSSLs https:/www.cheapssls.com/
I have applied for / renewed several hundred certificates in the last 2 years. Like all our applications they are still easy to install and work like. The reporting is top notch and customer service is always available when I need it.
I’ve ordered many SSL certs from Thawte over the years. Each time the experience is excellent. Very easy to install on both Linux- and Windows-based web servers.
Don’t use Thawte. I refunded the ssl within 4 hours of purchase. Yes, it’s that bad. Glad I dodged a bullet with this one.
It will offer enormous amounts of problems —will not fit with various versions of IE -will have problems running the website in Safari -will have costly supports and if you take the reseller ‘s certificate (who are unresponsive and ineffective in some way) you won’t answer as well
If you don’t make a mistake and buy the wrong item and trying to get a refund is like trying to climb 300,000 stairs without hands. After 4 weeks of trying to get a refund, make my bank try to cancel the transaction.
Terrible customer service/support. No proactive thinking. Terrible followup. WHOIS privacy settings on so Thawte doesn’t send confirmation email They also don’t send email advising of the issue. Just leave as pending until the customer contacts them. Avoid at all costs!
I’ve asked for two EVs for various organisations. Both have taken fortnight. This was not due to any confirmation issues, merely because they would not advance anything except by constantly asking them through the awful chat app (sometimes when they are too busy they tend to just turn this off). One Cert was released just two days before his predecessor’s expiry. The troubling thing is that they didn’t actually get in contact with the appointed approved individual as they say it was important to eventually speed it up, only talked to a reception staff member. Not well. Dear Webmaster, in the time to issue drop down for Thawte reviews you need an extra item ‘Several Weeks’!
Just renewing our Wildcard SSL Certificate was all I wanted to do. Just have it renewed. It’s week two now. Yes WEEK TWO, not second day. I was told I needed a company account so I said Yes. It has taken a day to sort this out. A Smile! So I was told I needed to make a fake purchase of SSL Wildcard credits worth 30 “Credits?” I don’t really know why. This was to approve me as a customer of the company. Then I had to use theses credits to “purchase” the certificate. We needed one server to span three. Sure they charge the server, but it is an SSL wildcard certificate. £2,700 more. I couldn’t, because their web interface says I have to buy a license for at least five servers. So I’m emailing them back and they’re saying they ‘re doing it for five and they’re going to make the settings. It’s taken a week to get through this. They have no UK bank account meanwhile so we had to pay in dollars. We don’t have a company credit card so we had to personally send somebody to the bank to make the transfer. All that took 10 emails and 12 days to complete. We still do not have a certificate and they’ve got our capital. The Enterprise account page says it takes 2 days or less to process. It’s been four since I even managed to put the order on their website. Also, they couldn’t give us an invoice with the actual order number on it, so I don’t know if it would come back from our department of Finance.
I bought Thawte certificate over the http://www.hostica.eu website. The certificates are cheaper and the support is the best. I can only recommend it!!
I use domain.com to buy this Thawte SSL. Price for 2 years is cheap USD$50. The sales do, however, on domain.com. It redirects to Thawte’s web page after purchasing it, the process is somehow tough. And Thawte is not going to be providing enough guidance. I’ve been stuck on the wrong intramediate cert. It’s spending me 2 hours solving it. I got ta look around, seeking a solution …
If you need a headache and 3 days of downtime, feel free to use thawte anyway. These are the most incompetent men I’ve ever had to deal. No phone service is pathetic and you get a dumb message played back when you finally try to contact them. We changed our email addresses so they could send us an email, but still their certificate, which should take 15 minutes to create, took us over one day, both times we renewed it. (First time there was an error on our part) but it happened within about half an hour after they got through to their tech support on chat. Went to GoDaddy, finished what I needed while they were on the phone to support them all the time and all done within a day (which is what they promised). A lot less, and lasts five years.
Our Thawte certificate causes us to fail a mandatory compliance scan so we need to withdraw it from another vendor and purchase from it. Although our cert is SHA1, it chained back to an MD5 root that caused the failure. Thawte service is incredibly frustrating and unresponsive and I’ve had a case open with no solution for 10 days. I’ll never buy another Thawte Cert. I will not buy from Verisign because they own Thawte either.
After 50 emails with Thawte helping people and 3-person working days on our end, our attempt to renew our certificate has left us with a website that works only in end. We have been able to renew our certificate easily every two years, since. The problem with the newly obtained intermediate certificates appears to be.
Unless this certificate is offered by the host and you pay only after it is installed, you can go for it. Else, never buy this certificate.
We paid about $400 (WHAT A MISTAKE) for a 5-year SSL cert, rather than getting it the way we always do from Go Daddy. They have changed some crap on their system which requires you to install something intermediate. It isn’t very complicated: An Outlook Online Access SSL certificate. For days, I have tried to get someone on the phone. It takes two business days to issue. They promise to call, they do not have their chat open … Long story short, Junk Company piece.
Painful is the only word I would describe my 10 years of having to buy Thawte certs. — Slow and disharmonious help. — A confusing website that conceals facts, and would often just not work. For instance: the old reseller site had selectors dropped by month and year, you would have to use them to see your certs. The year has rolled over and you have not been able to pick the new year until around April-March, when they have to patch it. We kept using them because there were all those assurances about how much better the new reseller platform would be. It did not. It was the same thing with many of the items we depended on gone, tidied up a little bit. It was almost like they didn’t want to do business with us, and they just wished that we would leave. We did. So we did. — Continues to filter marketing emails to me after I have repeatedly unsubscribed and written to my “account manager” demanding to be removed from the lists.
I’ve tried several times to get Thawte to recognize and diagnose problems with the Thawte 123 certificate on our web, even creating examples of videos and test pages to prove the problem, but they weren’t willing and unable to help me rectify the documented failure. Eventually, I found out alone that their certificate was invalid with root certificates for Safari browsers. I went with Digicert and now I have no issues, validating SSL in any browser.
The worst I’ve ever seen, is Thawte. Their coverage is next to zero and their homepage is so bad that I’m not even going to get started. The biggest issue I think is customer service. We say we have the help for 24 hours but it’s not there. It normally takes days to get help and it’s sluggish and hard to get things done actually. They adjust things and don’t warn people and their forms of payment leave much to be desired. Thawte has really got to step up their act. Unless they keep this up they won’t survive on being the largest. If you google Thawte just look at all the reviews on the net. Overhaul and redo from the ground up to get some customer service and MAYBE it’ll work. All my certs I am moving off Thawte …
I had been waiting for a certificate renewal for over 2 weeks. Customer service is irresponsive, emails are reaching the ether, faxes are lost. Today I was sent an email stating that my order was going to be cancelled in 48 hours because they didn’t have all the paperwork (which I have given them many times). I don’t think I’m going to use these again.
6 days to get an IIS SLL which should take 10 mins. No response to queries for days, nobody online for support chat, no contact form Thawte after you submit a query on the site… We will certainly look at moving our business to Comodo.
All thawte notification mails are sent using From: yourname@yourdomain.com To: yourname@yourdomain.com This is one of the most common patterns to which spam-blockers respond. We don’t acknowledge the improvement after many times telling thawte that I gave up, to change the sender to something like noreply@thawte.com or so …
Support tends to get you hurried into the process without offering any direction. I currently have Thawte help on hold, and have plenty of time to write this review. I’ve already been put on hold 3 times and the call is already over 32 minutes. All I’m trying to do is transfer the certificate from one domain to another. Because I’ve been disconnected now, this job has to be way above the help people head.
Thawte SSL certificates are working well. There are no issues having them published or approving them from popular browsers. The Thawte support staff are awful though. Thawte is in the process of introducing a seal / badge change that will enable its Certificate Customers to show on their pages. I have received a number of repeat emails from Thawte about this change even though after receiving the first email I made the necessary changes on my blog. I’ve tried emailing and calling for them to stop sending repeat emails, but they’re claiming they can’t do anything because the emails are automatic. They do not even pass me to anyone in the department responsible for sending the emails in the voice mail. After arguing about being transferred with the support rep, I informed him that he had three choices: 1) transfer me to the appropriate voice mail, 2) transfer me to his supervisor or 3) take my business elsewhere. I was put on “indefinite” hold after this as the help rep was trying to locate someone voice mail to pass me to. I think I’m going to transfer SSL Certificae to a business not owned by Verisign.
Thawte is a well-known Authority for Certificates and their certificates are very good. We help a lot of embedded devices and all of them seem to work. That said, this ….. Its support is almost unusable. We don’t publish phone numbers in the U.S. (which I can find), so I can’t dial from where I’m from abroad. Often email responses are days in the coming. Communication is Fine as to where the certificate is in the process, but when there are concerns it’s really hard to get a hold of anyone. I waited nearly an hour in a chat queue, then gave up. I’ve had luck in the past with them but now …….
With Thawte I had incredibly slow response times. Their South African processing center is not 24 hours, and they are closed on their native time (I am in the united states) several times when I need an response. After processing all the paperwork and paying for the certificate, they can take a day to process when there really is no more approval to be done. They are free, which is a certainly major bonus, but start your renewal process a week in advance to fix all the hangups you have to annoy their technical support over. Be prepared to repeatedly use their technical support chat for each single certificate.
