SSL_Error_No_Cypher_Overlap

How to Fix SSL_ERROR_NO_CYPHER_OVERLAP on Firefox?

The ‘SSL NO CYPHER OVERLAP’ error code occurs in Firefox when certain types of encryption have been deactivated either on the browser or on the server side. The problem mostly lies with the website or server that does not provide the correct encryption protocols and forces the browser not to open the site.

This error can occur while surfing any website even though it is most visible in outdated ones and those which are not maintained properly. There are ‘few’ remedies to fix this error, but it should be noted that Firefox’s latest versions always enforce a good security connection and if it is not provided, the website is blocked for browser access at all.

What causes the error code ‘SSL_ERROR_NO_CYPHER_OVERLAP’?

As previously mentioned, this error code occurs when in most cases the server fails to provide the browser ‘s request with proper security mechanisms or protocols, so the web page fails to load. But there are also some other reasons, such as:

Firefox is not updated to the latest version which causes issues when surfing the internet.
Web browser disables SSL3. In addition, the TLS which causes the error message can also be disabled.

RC4 support has been removed from Firefox completely and this error will be prompted if the web site passes it as a parameter.

Make sure you have administrator privileges and have a stable Internet connection before moving to the solutions.

Solution 1: Updating Firefox to the latest release

Firefox is being updated, and new security changes and protocols are being added all the time for a safer and better experience. If you have an older release of Firefox like SP2 or SP3, navigate to the official Firefox website and download the latest release, i.e. 24.

Installing Firefox-Windows

By pressing Windows + R, typing “appwiz.cpl” in the dialogue box, you can reinstall the current version of Firefox, and press Enter. Once in the manager for the program, right-click on Firefox and select Uninstall.

Once the older version has been uninstalled, download the latest one and restart your computer for proper changes. Also, when uninstalling the older one, ensure that you delete the configuration files.

PRO TIP: You should try using Restoro Repair to scan the repositories and replace corrupt and missing files if the problem is with your computer or a laptop / notebook. In most cases, this works where the problem originates from system corruption. Please click here to download Restore

Solution 2: Checks encryption protocols SSL3 and TLS1

Users will also experience this error if both the SSL3 and TLS1 encryption protocols on their Firefox version are disabled. Some websites require these protocols for their connection and you will not be able to view the web page if you have those disabled.

We’ll check Firefox’s Options and make sure they ‘re turned on as expected.

  • Click the Settings icon at the top right of the window, then select
  • Navigate now to Advanced > Encryption: logs

Whether protocols are enabled or not you’ll know here. Toggle the option if they aren’t, and allow it again. Note however that the Firefox 24 option will not be available to perform this action. You can navigate to Options > Privacy and Security > Security, if you already have the latest version of Firefox. Uncheck the Hazardous and Tricky content block option here. Save modifications, and restart your computer. Check that error message has been resolved.

Solution 3: Check Firefox setup file

If the above two methods don’t work for you, then we can try to check your Firefox configurations and check if any TLS and SSL3 module is disabled. If so, we will try to enable it, and try to re-access the website. In their operations these modules can be changed all the time so nothing to worry about.

Open Firefox ‘s new window, and paste the following address:

Now search in the near-top search bar for the keyword ‘TLS,’ check every entry starting with TLS whether it is set to a default value. If they aren’t, you’ll see a modified bolder entry that’ll also be tagged.

TLS and SSL3-Firefox Mozilla

Reset the required permissions in this case, and restart your computer. Search for ‘SSL3’ in the same search box, and do the same actions.

Note: If you are unable to access specific websites but are unable to access other websites, this will probably mean that the website is outdated and the server is having a problem. Here you can just wait and hope on the back end that the problem will be resolved. Also ensure you’ve got the latest Java version.
