What is an Intermediate certificate and how do I install it?

A chain or intermediate certificate is any certificate that exists between your certificate and the root certificate. These must be deployed with the principal certificate for your website on the webserver so that users’ browsers may associate your certificate with a trusted authority. For security reasons, most certificate authorities use intermediate certificates, which are supported by most web servers and devices. To find out more about Intermediate certificates and why most providers demand them for SSL Certificate installation, see Extinction of Unchained SSL Certificates.

How do I install a wildcard certificate?

A wildcard certificate is installed the same way that a standard certificate is installed. The only change is the * character in the common name column. Nothing extra is needed to install the certificate on the server.

What is reissuing a certificate?

You must reissue a certificate if you need to establish a new one based on a new private key. By reissuing the certificate, you can install it on a new server without having to move your private key, or replace it if your private key is lost or stolen. Although most certificate authorities provide free reissues, some are more accommodating than others. You will only need to produce a new CSR, reissue it with your certificate provider, then install the new certificate to reissue your certificate.

Do I have to buy a new certificate if my server crashes?

No, it’s not true. If you lose your existing private key, most certificate authorities will allow you to reissue the certificate with a new one. Even so, backing up your certificate and the private key is a smart idea.

How do I backup my private key?

Your digital certificate is meaningless without your private key. Once a private key is lost, it cannot be recovered. The certificate authority that issues the certificate never sees your private key, so if you misplace it, they can’t help you. You can produce a new private key and reissue the certificate if you lose your private key. Using our SSL certificate backup service, you may protect your SSL certificate.
