-err [auth] plaintext authentication disallowed on non-secure (ssl/tls) connections.

Question:

When I try to get email on my Mac, I get this error message for the past two days. I have no problems with my password, and I continue to receive emails with my password on other devices. Just in case, I tried to reset.

The server for account “Comcast” returned the error “-err [auth] plaintext authentication disallowed on non-secure (ssl/tls) connections..” It’s possible that your username, password, or security settings are incorrect.

Would you like to try typing your password in again?

Answer:

It’s most likely a server-side authentication issue, based on the error message. You may check if your account is configured correctly by going to Tools > Accounts.

Email Configuration Settings to fix -err [auth] plaintext authentication disallowed on non-secure (ssl/tls) connections.

To configure an email client to use Comcast email (@comcast.net), the following settings should be used for sending and receiving email:

  1. Incoming mail server name: imap.comcast.net
  2. incoming mail server port number:
    1. recommended: 993 with SSL ON
    2. only if needed: 143 with SSL ON
  3. Outgoing mail server name: smtp.comcast.net
  4. outgoing mail server port number:
    1. recommended: 587 (SMTP)
    2. Only if needed: 465 (SMTPS)
  5. SSL Encryption: checked
  6. Authentication: Xfinity username and password required.

POP Access

Using POP to retrieve email will cause a less than optimal experience, especially when you use multiple devices to check your email. We strongly recommend IMAP over POP since this will keep your emails in syns across different devices. If you do need to use POP due to any reason, you can use the following connection information:

  1. Incoming mail server name: pop3.comcast.net
  2. incoming mail server port number: 995 (POP3 With SSL)

Please note that incoming mail server port number 110 is not supported. if you wish to continue to use POP, please update your configuration to Port 995. To do so, find your email application’s settings or Preferences section on the device that you use to access your Comcast email account. Note that depending on your email application, port configurations may be located under advanced settings.
