Protection against advanced phishing attacks and malware

Administrators can protect their mail from phishing attacks and other harmful software. Based on the threat, you can choose which action to take. You might decide to delete suspicious content from your Spam folder or to warn it by leaving it in your Inbox. You can customize the security settings for different users or teams by using organizational units.

Gmail defaults display warnings and moves spam emails to the spam folder. This article will help you to identify unwanted and harmful emails.

Advanced security settings

  • AttachmentsProtection against suspicious attachments and scripts sent by untrusted senders. Protection against unusual attachment types for your domain – these can be used to spread malware.
  • External images and links you can identify links that are hidden behind short URLs and scan the linked images for malicious content.
  • Spoofing and authentication protect against the spoofing of domain names, employee names, email pretending that it is from your domain, as well as unauthenticated emails from any domain. An unauthenticated email displays a question mark beside the sender’s address. Spoofing protection is available for both private and public groups.

Advanced settings allow you to:

  • Automated turn on future recommended settings and then apply them. This will ensure maximum protection of your email and attachments.
  • Turn on all security options to provide the highest level of protection for an organization or domain.
  • You can customize security settings by selecting only the options that you wish to activate. All advanced security settings will be disabled for your domain or organization unit if you uncheck all options.
  • For each security option that you have turned on, specify an action. The default action will be applied to security options if you don’t choose an action.

Notes

  • Other spam settings –These advanced security features can be used independently of any spam settings that you may have turned on previously. The enhanced security features will still be applied even if a domain has been listed as a safe sender in your spam settings.
  • Quarantine auction –Select the quarantine you can choose to use any of the advanced security settings. Only to receive incoming messages. Even if your quarantine specifies that you will take action on outgoing messages, this is true.
  • Warning banners email web is the only place that warns users (yellow boxes) Warning banners are not displayed by third-party apps.

What impact do selected actions have on users

This table lists the actions you can choose as an administrator for each advanced security setting and their impact on users.

Take Action User impact
Warn! Messages are sent to the user’s email. A warning banner is displayed to the user about the message. This option allows users to open the message and read it.

Send email to Spam All messages are sent to the spam folder. Users can open and view spam messages by going to their spam folder. If possible, users can mark messages as “not Spam” This action doesn’t allow users to see banners.
Quarantine Users don’t see any messages if this action has been selected. Administrator quarantine receives messages and reviews them. The admin then allows the message to be delivered directly to the users’ inboxes. This action doesn’t display banners to users.
